Celebrating Independence Day
There will be plenty of activities for Henry County residents to choose from during the upcoming Independence Day holiday weekend. On Friday, July 4, Hampton’s Downtown Development Authority will be having a parade beginning at 9:00 a.m. down Main Street with a brief stop for a ribbon cutting for the new streetscape project. Then there will be an “old fashioned” picnic at the Park until 4:00 p.m. with games, food and other vendors and activities for all. McDonough will be having their “Ice Cream Social on the Square” beginning at 7:00 p.m. Featuring free ice cream, music and other activities, it is a good time to come and celebrate the freedom of our country for the past 232 years. On July 3 and 4, nearly two dozen men and women will take the stage at Nash Farm Park to act out scenes from our nation’s revolutionary history in the days just prior to our declaration of independence from England’s rule. From the County’s namesake patriot, Patrick Henry to Benjamin Franklin and George Washington, strolling actors will bring the United States’ colorful beginnings to life. Festival-goers can experience the colonial days with living history exhibits featuring tradesmen demonstrating their work, colonial music and dancing with live bands, period games for children and carriage rides. To end the evening will be the annual fireworks. New to this year’s celebration will be live music each night from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. on the Village Green. On Thursday, July 3, Bartles Entertainment will present the finalists for Henry County Idol for performance and the winner will be crowned. On Friday, July 4, come out and enjoy oldies and classic rock tunes played by the local band, The Regulars. Tickets are $5 for adults and children ages 13 and up. Children ages six through twelve will be $2. Children 5 and under can enter for free. For an additional $5, children can get a day pass to the Kids Zone, which will feature an inflatable obstacle course and a 22 ft slide, sack races, a water balloon toss, and more.

Are you smarter than a college student?
|
An evening of entertainment and support for an important cause is coming on Saturday, July 26, at the Henry County Performing Arts Center beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Henry County High School Scholarship Foundation will be hosting “Are You Smarter Than a College Student” featuring all local students and community leaders. Patterned after the popular television show “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader,” this program will have Jason Harper, Andy Welch, Rev. Dudley Rose, Dana Lemon, Pam Nutt and Denese Rodgers playing this game against six of the current scholarship winners. The Honorable Ben Studdard will host the event so there will be no chance of our community leaders trying to pull a fast one over on our college students. The college scholarship recipients will be representing Emory University, Savannah College of Art and Design, The University of Georgia, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Auburn University and Georgia Tech. In 1989, Mrs. Joann Nutt, a longtime teacher at Henry County High School, established the Henry County High School Foundation, which provided scholarships to deserving graduating seniors. In 2006, the Foundation was expanded to include all high schools in the Henry County System. The scholarship is renewable on an annual basis and may follow a student through a four year degree as long as a grade point average criterion is maintained. An average of over $50,000 in scholarships is raised through business and individual donations and the entire amount of this money is awarded each year. For more information, please call 770-914-8581. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Moye’s, Seasons, or at the door.
